Our Eats from the Village Voice Choice Eats Bleecker March 23, 2015 Events, Featured, NYC Happenings Recently the Eat Up New York Healthy Eater and I went on a great food adventure to the Village Voice Choice Eats. This year was the 8th annual Village Voice Choice Eats, where more than 50 of the best restaurants from the city come and serve up samples of their classic dishes. Beyond just restaurants there are various other specialty food and drink vendors. We sampled everything from moonshine to broccoli tacos and loved it all! From the whirlwind of food it was hard to differentiate the vendors but here are 5 tables from the Village Voice Choice Eats that were most memorable to us! Untamed Sandwiches They were serving up an awesome sample of their “The Butt” sandwich and giving out very generous samples, which not all of the tables managed to do. “The Butt” sandwich consists of cide braised pork butt, broccoli rabe, pepper jelly, Dijon mustard and sharp cheddar. It knocked our socks off! Check out my recent post on Untamed Sandwiches and their amazing beer dinner. No. 7 at Village Voice Choice Eats No. 7 came from Fort Greene to let me try the best vegetarian taco I’ve ever had. Their Double Decker Broccoli Tacos were also filled with feta, fried shallots and beans. The contents are in a hard shell taco that is then wrapped in a soft warm tortilla, yum! McClure’s Pickles I am a pickle lover and the guys from McClure’s had all of the works going on. All of the pickles from McClures were delicious but what really stood out to me was their awesome Bloody Mary mix. This Bloody Mary mix is spiked with pickles! Add your favorite vodka or gin and call it a party! Luckily you can find their awesome products at Whole Foods! Manhattan Moonshine What is so cool about Manhattan Moonshine is that they are making real old school prohibition style unaged whiskey. This moonshine is made with New York grown grains. We got to sample their booze and it definitely started off the weekend right! Umi Nom Umi Nom makes food that is a fantastic fusion of Thai and Filipino. Their table at Village Voice Choice Eats was an instant eye catcher with a pigs head front and center. We got to taste their Pork Belly Adobo which is braised in soy, vinegar and garlic and then finished on the grill. The pork belly was so juicy with crispy skin, the best of combinations! The only downside, of the Village Voice Choice Eats event, was that some of the vendors had run out of food so early that we never got an opportunity to sample their goods. I am sure that it is difficult to plan out how much food you have to bring to an event like this but, as my mother always says, better to have too much than not enough! We definitely had a ball at the 8th Annual Village Voice Choice Eats and are already looking forward to next years event.
