Grand Central Holiday Fair – The Only Indoor Holiday Market in NYC Trent Warner November 9, 2014 Featured Holiday season in New York is a smorgasbord of festivals, open air markets, Christmas trees, candles and bright lights. It doesn’t get much better than that. For the next month and a half those of us that live in or around Manhattan will have the opportunity to survey and experience as many of these delectable treats as we can fit into our already overly-busy schedules. And since your time is limited we figured we would make it easier for you to find the truly interesting events going on in the city over the next couple months. Last blog we talked about the Winter Village at Bryant Park (which was pretty awesome) but we understand that some of our readers may prefer the comfort of the indoors when things get downright chilly. So, if you fall into the latter category you may want to go check out the Grand Central Holiday Fair. Here’s what you need to know. Grand Central Holiday Fair – A Brief History The station itself has enough drama to compete with midday telenovelas and enough history to put it in the running with some of the greatest monuments across the United States (Mount Rushmore, the Lincoln Memorial, etc.). Did you know that the Nazi’s tried to attack a secret underground power station (located directly under Grand Central)? Or that FDR had an elevator installed to he could travel up to the Waldorf-Astoria hotel from the station? If not, then you may want to check out the terminals history page (we promise it will lead to a much more interesting and fulfilling trip to the Holiday fair). What is the Grand Central Holiday Fair? The Grand Central Holiday fair is exactly what you would expect it to be. It is a holiday market that operates within the terminal (this year in the esteemed Vanderbilt Hall). But that is where those predictable expectations end as the content of the Holiday fair is a bit more mysterious. With a wide variety of art, clothing, jewelry, home goods, collectible toys and other holiday gifts you might be surprised what you can find in the marbled halls of Grand Central.
