With the ice cream business part of her family history, Melissa, the founder of Tipsy Scoop, may have been destined for this industry. But no one, not even her family, could have predicted her creative take on this beloved treat and how much success she’d have. By infusing ice cream with booze, Melissa has created quite the unique indulgence that will surely satisfy your sweet (and boozy ice cream) tooth.

I recently had the privilege of going behind Tipsy Scoop with Melissa to talk all things business, boozy ice cream, and the buzz on social media.

How did you get started in the Boozy Ice Cream making business?

I actually started doing Marketing for different Wine and spirits clients and always enjoyed cooking and baking on the side. I started experimenting with making regular old non-alcoholic ice cream and from there came up with the idea to spike the ice cream! It took awhile to perfect the recipes! Also, as it turns out, ice cream making is a big part of the family tradition! My great grandfather was the president of the Ice Cream Alliance in Great Britain and my ancestors owned several ice cream shops throughout Scotland.

Have you always dreamed of starting your own business?

Actually no! But once I had the idea to make liquor-infused ice cream and came up with the recipes and name, I got really passionate about the project and from there it really grew into a business!

Have you always had a passion for food and cooking?

I have always loved food! I always like trying new products and going to food fairs and specialty food shops. I love experimenting with new recipes for dinner and trying out new places for brunch!

What was it like starting a business in New York City?

NYC is definitely the best and hardest place to start a business. It’s the best because you have access to the best of everything and the hardest because it is so competitive!

What general advice would you give to entrepreneurs?

There are really great days and really bad days. It is definitely a roller coaster to start your own business and if you can work through the challenges it will definitely be more rewarding than anything.

What does a typical day/week look like for you?

Half the day in our kitchen, half the day running around to meetings or coordinating catered events.

Have you found social media platforms to be helpful for your business?

Instagram has been amazing. We have gotten a lot of business out of it. It is a great tool to use for small businesses that do not have huge budgets for advertising.

Where do you find inspiration for your flavors?

Different desserts and cocktails I like and new spirits and liqueurs.

Any other favorite locally created treats you enjoy in New York?

Empire Mayo is a really cool local New York brand! I love the White Truffle mayo on a burger or sandwich!

Be honest, how much ice cream do you really eat a day? (We’re not judging, we promise!)

Ha! Well I have to taste test! But try not to have more than a scoop a dayJ

What’s next for Tipsy Scoop?

We are now selling to retailers so look for us at specialty stores and ice cream shops throughout NYC starting this Spring!
